English and German hospitals to be built in ErbilA British hospital will be constructed in Erbil, according to an official at the Kurdistan Board of Investment (KBI). "The hospital will be built inside the English Village residential compound on Gulan Road, close to the airport," stated Kamaran Mufti, director general of promotion, assessment, and licensing projects at KBI.
The project, licensed on October 14, will cost around US$18 million with investments from Iraqi businessman George Kako.
Another project in the pipeline is the 400-bed Iraqi-German Hospital (IGH), according to Mufti. The hospital will be one of the largest and best-equipped medical centers in Kurdistan Region. Further details are unavailable at this time, Mufti noted..
In January of this year, another license was given to a large medical project, the Majidi Private Hospital. The hospital project, owned by the local Majidi family and owners of the Majidi Mall, will be located on the Erbil-Salahaddin Highway. Cost of the project will exceed US$51 million, noted Haro Ahmad Majidi, a manager at Erbil-based Hewa Group and owners of the Majidi Hospital.
According to Faraydoun Rafiq, a doctor in Erbil, the opening of such medical centers will make Kurdistan Region an established place for medical tourism. "Medical tourism will also benefit from [the hospitals], because many people in Kurdistan and the rest of Iraq will not travel abroad for treatment. They will stay in Iraq. Even people from outside Iraq can come here and benefit from these hospitals," said Dr. Rafiq.
